As a language student who wishes to be fluent in a foreign language, I am often frustrated that it seems like the only difference between an interpreter and a language translator is the emphasis put on one or the other. What are memorization techniques? The basic grammar, spelling, and punctuation. As an actual translator, it is incredibly important to be able to speak the language as well as being able to translate it in plain and simple English.
The differences between the two professions are so vast that it is hard to discuss. If you want to be an interpreter, you need to be a good speaker of the language. If you are a language translator, you need to be a good speaker of the language. This doesn’t mean, however, that you should be able to do both at the same time.
An interpreter can translate text using a specific language. For example, the person doing the translation can always communicate with the exact wording used in the original written work. A translator is more likely to choose a different style, or “the language of the country” as the term is used in other fields, then they can translate using the language they are more familiar with.
A translator can help to make the written or spoken language sound natural to the listener. This ability, while not always needed, is greatly valued in translation. It allows the translator to give the exact nuance and tone of a language that does not allow direct expression.
A translator can also be used for English to Spanish, or English to German. One of the most difficult things in any language is to sound, at the same time, natural to a native speaker. And, when translating to Spanish or German, this is even more important. So, if you are speaking German, it is especially important that the language you are using, or the one you are translating into, be easy to pronounce and understand. The process of translation is often complex. Sometimes, the language used is not only different from the speaker’s own native language, how hard is it to learn a foreign language but can also be similar or the same to it. In many cases, the way that a language is translated from one language to another can be a method of fixing it or doing away with it. The better the skill in your language, the more easily you can be fluent.
To be a good interpreter, or a good translator, is to be a generalist, able to work with a variety of languages. A translator, because of the requirement of the medium, is restricted to one language. The job of an interpreter, though, is more flexible. They may be fluent in a large number of languages, but one language for this article.
